Eid is an amazing time to celebrate with family and friends. After the long hours of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan for Eid El Fitr or Eid Al Adha and all its festive celebrations: it is time to splurge, go full out and enjoy the delights and sweets that Eid can offer. Right?
Unfortunately, whether we would like to admit it or not, Eid has a lot of temptations. Whether it is staring you in the face in your living room, or it is in the form of an invitation to a relatives house for kahk or a catch up with friends over tea and Eid biscuits, it is all the same outcome- huge massive amounts of sugar entering your kids body over the period of a few days! The worst part is you may not be able to control it!
Here are 6 tips for healthier teeth for your kids to survive the imminent Eid attack!
1- Avoid offering kahk el Eid as a breakfast item to your kids. This leads to them getting hungry faster, quicker and they end up having even more!
2- It is a good idea to give them your Eid sweets directly after a main meal. This way their teeth are still protected by a high saliva flow rate.
3- It is advisable to give your kids bulk sweets and ask them to eat it in one go- give them their satisfaction of all the sweets at one go, rather than keep a plate full in front of them and allow to constantly snack (or graze).
4- Why don’t you just schedule it in at a time of day where everyone can satisfy their sweet tooth craving, rather than fall victim to temptation whenever it presents. Making it a family event of eating sweets and then brushing the teeth!
5- There are great ways to protect the teeth from damage after eating sweets. Some easy and simple ways include:
- A- Eating a piece of sugar free gum for older kids (preferably containing xylitol) after a meal increases the washing effect of saliva and removes remnant food stuck on your teeth- acting like a brush in a way.
B- Did you know about the wonders of cheese? A little piece of cheese (especially yellow cheese) can neutralize your mouth and teeth after consuming highly acidic or intensely sweet food- making it all return to normal.
6- Last but not least best strategy ever to have your teeth healthy for life is to:
1- Brush twice daily (for 2 mins straight)
2- Use an appropriately fluoridated paste for your child’s needs
3- Regularly visit your pediatric dentist in dubai for routine checkups- don’t forget its every 6 months
4- Ask your dentist for children about your child’s risk from tooth damage, especially if you consume a lot of juices or drink a lot of coffee.
Wishing you a glorious Eid spent with family and friends. To healthy habits for long lasting teeth.
