It’s that time of year once more. It’s that time of year when we put away the swimsuits and pull out the schoolbooks and pencils. As a parent, you have a lot of work to do to get your child ready for school in the fall, but one thing that should not be overlooked is proper dental care. Here are some tips to keep in mind as your children return to school to ensure they maintain a healthy smile throughout the school year:
Create a Dental Routine
It is critical to instil good dental hygiene habits in your children at a young age so that they are better equipped to maintain good oral health, which improves overall health. Most children do not understand the concept of time, which leads to them not brushing their teeth for the appropriate amount of time. There are cute tooth brushing timers that can help you and your child keep track of how long you and your child brush your teeth. Make sure they brush their teeth at least twice a day.
Packing Lunch and Snacks
Along with purchasing new school supplies and preparing for a slew of homework assignments, preparing lunch and snacks can put a lot of strain on parents/guardians. Keep in mind the importance of providing a healthy, balanced diet for their children. It is critical to ensure that they have adequate protein, fruits, vegetables, and grains. Carry water bottles and avoid juice boxes or other sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), as well as snacks that are “sticky and tacky” in nature (i.e., fruit snacks). Snacks and foods high in refined carbohydrates should be consumed in moderation. If your child eats purchased school lunches, sit down with them, and talk about making healthy food choices. If your tweens or teenagers have access to vending machines at their schools, sit down and talk with them about choosing healthy foods to consume.
Make dental appointments in advance.
While at-home dental care is essential, regular dental visits are also required. A dentist will clean your child’s teeth thoroughly, perform an oral examination, and address any potential problems, such as cavities or gum disease. Finding these issues early on will prevent them from worsening in the future.
Sports activities
Dental injuries are among the most common sports injuries. Youth sports are an important part of a child’s life, and mouth injuries are common. Before their sport begins, they should get a custom-fitted mouthguard. Invest in a mouth guard for added security.
